“The Tears of Things”

There is a term, lachrymae rerum, meaning the tears of things. To be human is to experience the tears of things when grief and loss overwhelm us.

Dear Friend,

I know you have experienced the pain associated with loss.  I know that because you are human.  We all are familiar with the unpleasant, distressing feelings associated with loss and grief.  It doesn’t matter whether our grief is the result of the death of a dear loved one or the death of a dream or the loss of a job or the moving away of our best friend.  Loss, whether big or small, hurts, and we grieve.

When Lorelle and I decided to combine our talents to write this book, I had suffered several types of loss, including the death of many of my relatives.  Within a space of 15 months Lorelle’s family went from 5 to 2.  In a short period of time we had both become far more familiar with the pain of grief than we ever expected to.

But we discovered amazing things as we grieved our losses and worked through our heartache, struggling to find a way to recover from our hurt.  Just as only the early morning sunshine brings out the blooms of the Morning Glory flower, only the experience of grief brings forth things which are hidden in our hearts to expose them for the world to see.

Our most broken moments reveal the most to us

It is at our weakest, most broken moments that God’s glory is most perfectly revealed.  He gives us beauty for ashes.  He gives the oil of joy for mourning.  He gives a garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.  As we accept these gifts from his hand, Jesus is glorified for all to behold.

If you’d like to learn the joy of living in the midst of grief, if you’d like to find help through the grief your loss has brought into your life, if you’d like to experience the glory of God as you work through the many facets of grief, then this might be the most important letter you’ll ever read.

"Mourning Glory is a book that will help you restabilize your life after a loss." says Ann Van Dyke, MA LAC, Veteran Counselor.

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. Isaiah 61:3 KJV

Here’s why:

In Mourning Glory, Lorelle and I share a personal experience with grief in each devotional as well as how God used that experience to reveal himself.  For example, in her devotional entitled Beauty of Humility, Lorelle describes her reflections on the humility that takes place during the death process.  “We strive to maintain our independence.  But the stages of disease stripped Harry of being able to function on any level independently.  Those he had trained now became his support.  Some of his young basketball players were his most faithful prayer warriors.  His dependence on God and others increased with each passing day…I think the Lord sees beauty in humility, the beauty of us at our weakest point reaching out to him for strength.  Perhaps there is even greater beauty in the humility of death.  For that is when we step out of our weak physical bodies into the newness of his life.”

We candidly share our questions, doubts and reservations about God’s ways and means of dealing with us in our difficulties.  For example, in my devotional entitled With God Nothing is Impossible, I admit there are times when I question God.  My mother and I had a horrible relationship.  I confided to a dear friend that I didn’t think my relationship with my mother would ever get better.  My friend responded by asking God to heal me and my mother before she died, to give us his love for each other.  How did God respond?  “Mother had a stroke, took a fall and had hip replacement.  When she came out of the anesthetic she barely recognized anyone but me, and all she knew about me was that I was close to her…I fell on my knees that night, weeping, ‘Oh, why, merciful father, have you allowed mother to live as a near vegetable?  What is the purpose?  I can’t believe you would do this to me.  Where is your compassion?  Where is your love for me?  Now you have really deserted me in my hour of need.’  With this inauspicious beginning the tale of mother’s and my healing commenced.”

We share our victories and insights into grief in Mourning Glory because we want to help and encourage you as you deal with your loss and grief.  In the devotional A Place of Rest, Lorelle describes how we can discover the anchor for our soul.  “We can be excited, happy, full of joy.  Suddenly circumstances will swing us to the opposite side of the pendulum, and we are dealing with grief, sorrow and despair…We don’t have to deny these emotions.  We can honestly embrace them and express them but we don’t have to stay there.  One of my pastors once told me that grief is work and you can’t work endlessly 24 hours a day, day after day.  You must have some rest.  We need rest from grief too.  We can’t live in a place of sorrow and grief continuously.  The Lord has provided a rest from this work of grief.”  You, too, can discover the anchor for your soul and experience the rest from grief that God wants to give to you.

We’ve recorded our experiences with grief and loss, along with the valuable insights these experiences gave us, because it is only through our experience with grief and loss that we have begun to get a glimpse of the depth and breadth and richness of God’s character.  We’ve personally been enveloped in his healing solace, comfort and compassion.  We’ve marveled at his strength, power, faithfulness, holiness, truth, wisdom and unconditional love that he has poured out on us.  It is out of love and gratitude for our Lord, because of the things he taught us about himself and ourselves through our grief and loss, that we want to share our experiences with you.  We want you to become acquainted with the joy that can only be found in knowing and experiencing God in the midst of grief.

There is a lot of confusion surrounding the trauma of mourning and grief.  In writing Mourning Glory, we have endeavored to lessen the confusion and soften the trauma.  We believe that any book about mourning and grief should:

1:  Be based on Godly principles.

2:  Include honest, personal experiences.

3:  Deal with the subject with both humor and wisdom.

4:  Show the way by which Godly grief can transform you and your life.

5:  Deal not only with the grief associated with death and dying but with everyday losses.

Mourning Glory is based on these five basic concepts.  It will absolutely, positively help you grieve in a healthy, healing, freeing manner that will allow you to experience God’s glory.

The wisdom and healing power in this book is invaluable.  We have experienced it, and continue to live it.  We want you to experience God’s wisdom and healing too.
